Hakim Scott, who was found guilty today of manslaughter in the death of Jose Sucuzhanay’s, who man beaten to death in what prosecutors charged was a hate crime. Scott, however, was found not guilty of the more serious charge of 2nd degree murder as a hate crime.

The jury did find Scott guilty of 1st degree manslaughter in the death of Jose Sucuzhanay and 1st degree attempted assault in the attack on Jose’s brother, Romel Sucuzhanay.

Scott faces a possible sentence of 5-25 years for the manslaughter charge and 5-15 years for the attempted manslaughter charge. Judge Patricia Dimango has set the sentencing date for June 9.

A second jury is deliberating the case against Scott’s friend, Keith Phoenix, who prosecutors say beat Sucuzhanay with a baseball bat.
