Furniture designers based in Red Hook are going to make a killing: they’re selling outrageously expensive wooden tables and chairs made from repurposed pieces of the Coney Island boardwalk. Jason Horvath and Bill Hilgendorf started Uhuru—Swahili for “freedom” and Nichelle Nichols’s character on the original Star Trek—seven years ago, and now their Coney Island pieces are selling from anywhere to $4,500 to $7,200. All of this from buying 200 feet of discarded planks from a contractor, for a whopping $800. Quite a lofty goal, boys!
