No Fly Zone for Geese Over Brooklyn

Home Live Wire No Fly Zone for Geese Over Brooklyn

After US Airways Flight 1549, the so-called “Miracle on the Hudson”, was brought down by geese flying into the engine, federal officials have stepped up a crackdown on the birds, according to a story in the New York Times Magazine.

Federal officials have expanded killing zones for geese seven miles around LaGuardia and JFK airports, according to a new map acquired by the Brooklyn Paper.

Animal Rights group like the Friends of Animals call the City’s campaign against the geese: “an endless cycle of urban violence.” They propose installing measures like loudspeakers to scare geese away from the paths of airplanes.

The USDA’s Wildlife Service has been euthanizing the birds but with apparently little effect. Despite having killed 2,000 birds city wide this past summer their numbers are rebounding.
