The Rikers Island prison guard who just six year ago was filing for bankruptcy claimed her Mega Millions Lottery winnings yesterday at a ceremony in Downtown Brooklyn, as reported by the NY Post.

Garina Fearon of Brooklyn lived a life of poverty for many years, often on the edge of financial ruin. Fearon spent her adolescence in a homeless shelter without any family. She began working as a guard at Rikers Island and credits that with a dramatic upward turn in the direction of her life.

Fearon, 34, with two children ages 16 and 14, took the lottery’s lump-sum payment of $22,723,873 after tax. She has not decided whether she will quit her job at Rikers. She claims she won the lottery by accident, buying a Mega Millions ticket instead of the Powerball ticket she’d intended to buy.
