Police Commissioner Raymond Kelley hailed as a hero the Park Slope shopkeeper who fended off a robber with a plastic trash can.
Mohammed Esa was behind the counter at New Star Tobacco last Wednesday around 2:45 p.m. when a man walked in, drew a knife and demanded money, reported The New York Times.
“Obviously, it was a pretty heroic act on the part of the shopkeeper,” Kelly said Tuesday afternoon. “He was, I know, upset by the fact that the hard-earned money was going to be taken.”
The heroic moment was captured on film. Esa is seen hitting the robber with the trash can, impeding the robber’s attempts to steal from the cash register. The robber fled in a stolen van that was recovered on Sunday.
