A plan released Friday by the Department of Education proposed an amendment to the 2010-2014 budget that would add 20,000 seats for students across the city, the Brooklyn Eagle reports.
If approved, the amendment would bring the total to 50,074 seats, raising it from the current proposed level of 30,074. In Brooklyn, the proposal would add a total of 12,896 seats to Districts 13, 14, 15, 20 and 22. Districts 15 and 20 stand to gain most from this proposal since they are currently the most overcrowded, the Eagle reports. District 15 includes Red Hook, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, some of Sunset Park, Park Slope and some of Brooklyn Heights. District 20 includes Bay Ridge, Borough Park, Bensonhurst and the rest of Sunset Park.
If passed, the amendment would cost $16.18 billion over five years. The previous total as of February was $11.7 billion, according to the Eagle. Elementary schools stand to gain the most seats.
