Brooklyn grew by 102,000, while Manhattan’s population shrunk in 2008 to 2009 for the first time, according to census data released yesterday.

Population experts — who are working overtime answering reporters’ calls these days — attribute Brooklyn’s growth to an influx of immigrants and Manhattan’s shrinkage to the collapse of the financial sector. But before you get too cocky, Brooklyn, Queen’s appears to be on the rise, with Gothamist asking “Is Queen’s the new Brooklyn?”

But wait! I haven’t filled out my census forms yet. Never fear, these are just estimates. A prelude to the giant national number crunching that’s yet to take place.
