Census Keeps Count, Block by Block

Home Live Wire Census Keeps Count, Block by Block

After years of planning, now comes the most important part for the U.S. Census Bureau – counting. Millions of census forms were mailed to households across the country over the last few weeks and nationally, 50% of the 10-question forms have been returned. For the first time the Census Bureau is using a mail participation rate – rather than the mail response rate – to track their forms. The mail participation rate counts forms mailed back by households that received them. And the results are being updated daily – and broken down by neighborhood – on their website.

Data for Brooklyn reveals participation rates generally fall in the 20-40% range with a few notable neighborhoods. The highest participation rate – 70% – is located in a tract of East Flatbush, East Williamsburg boasts the lowest participation rate, with just a 4% mail participation rate.
