Two years ago, two Ecuadorian brothers, Jose and Romel Sucuzhanay were walking home from a bar in Bushwick when two men misinterpreted their huddling in the cold as homosexuality and began to shout insults aimed at gays and Hispanics. After being beaten with an aluminum bat, Jose went into a coma and died, while Romel was injured.

The two men who were charged, Hakim Scott and Keith Phoenix, pleaded not guilty to assault and second-degree murder today.
