The Angel of Music, a five-foot marble statue that graced the tomb of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, was once one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York State when it was erected in the 19th century. But for as long as anyone at the cemetery now can remember, it has been missing.
Volunteers sifting through files have discovered that the statue was taken down in 1959 due to vandalism, the Times reports. It was a shock to Richard Moylan, the cemetary’s president. The cemetery is looking to replace the statue.
