At least if you want to be sure your food is safe and unspoiled. The State Department of Agriculture and Markets has said that re-labeling food is legal after a woman complained that a Key Food in Brooklyn Heights did just that. The customer found a chicken in the store with a “sell by date” that said June 10. Under that sticker, she found another that had a June 2 date. The Brooklyn Paper reports that even though the store faced some of the most egregious deficiencies of the most serious grade during an inspection, store employees have done nothing illegal with the re-labeling. “‘Sell by’ dates are nothing but a tool for store managers,” Jessica Ziehm, spokeswoman for the Department of Agriculture and Markets, told The Brooklyn Paper. “It’s not illegal to re-date or re-package, though they’re still required to sell safe, wholesome products. We went there and found no problems.” Best bet, Brooklyn residents: check the food closely yourself before you buy.
