From the Associated Press, a Brooklyn judge ruled on Tuesday that the FDNY’s entrance exam as discriminatory and that the city cannot hire any new firefighters unless they adhere to his proposed hiring guidelines.

Judge Nicholas Garaufis issued five hiring proposals last month. The suit was initially field by the Vulcan Society and is being legally represented by the Center for Constitutional Rights. An attorney for the group says she is happy with the judge’s decision but that the city has not complied.

The city is working to create a new entrance exam for firefighters, but lawyers for the city said that the judge’s proposed guidelines adhere to “race-based quotas” and that they are planning to appeal the decision.
