Home Live Wire Councilman says no to Greenpoint Homeless Shelter

Councilman Steve Levin says plans to convert an occupied industrial loft in Greenpoint into a 200-bed men’s shelter would only bring more problems to the neighborhood, reports The New York Post.

Levin believes the proposal, led by Manhattan-based HELP USA, “fails to address Greenpoint’s current homeless population,” because Greenpoint’s homeless population is primarily Polish-speaking with “deep roots in the community.” Levin says the project will only “introduce 200 more homeless men to the neighborhood.”

HELP USA first introduced the proposal on Aug. 10 to CB1 Chairman Olechowski, who set up a public hearing, according to the Post. In an effort to skip the hearing, HELP USA went straight to Levin. But Levin says the proposed shelter location is isolated and dangerous because residents would have to cross McGuinness Boulevard daily.
