The City Council has approved the merger of the Administration for Children’s Services and the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to The Gotham Gazette. The move is an attempt to keep children out of jail and promote other programs as alternatives to imprisonment.

The merger was announced by Mayor Bloomberg in January, and was supported by many of the city’s juvenile justice advocacy groups. The merger is expected by officials to not only save children’s lives, but also $2.4 million.
