Brooklyn is awash in opportunities for its 2.5 million residents to give back.  Here, a look at giving and giving institutions in Brooklyn, by the numbers.

300: number of community development and employment organizations in Brooklyn

857: number of social service and health organizations

588: number of educational institutions

12: percent of all registered nonprofit organizations in New York State are located in Brooklyn

1st: borough to have a community foundation devoted to itself is Brooklyn.  The corporate Independence Community Foundation changed its tax status so it could fundraise.  Along with its status the organization changed its name, to the Brooklyn Community Foundation.

154: billion dollars is the estimated collective net worth of Brooklynites for 2010 – resources upon which residents can draw to be charitable

8: number of four star-rated Brooklyn-based charities on nonprofit rating site Charity Navigator
