Brownsville Street Gangs To Attempt Peace Talk

Home Live Wire Brownsville Street Gangs To Attempt Peace Talk

Rivaling street gangs in the impoverished neighborhood of Brownsville will meet later this month to stop violent turf wars, according to a report by New York Daily News. Anthony Neweris, founder of the Brooklyn Blizzards Youth Organization, said that at least five gangs have agreed to meet at a secret location for the truce negotiations.

Brownsville’s city housing developments has turned into a hotbed for gangs and crimes. In October, a mother of twelve (and pregnant with her thirteenth) died while shielding children from gunfire. Last July, 15-year-old Tyquan “Nookie” Jamison was shot and killed on the Howard Houses basketball court.

But former Bloods gang member Joe Figueroa is doubtful the talks will be successful, though he added that “it’s worth a try.”
