Penn State officials have fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing uproar over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The massive shake-up came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season. Paterno has more victories than any coach in major college football history.

Paterno was born on December 21, 1926 in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood. As a young boy Paterno was an usher at Ebbets Field and went on to attend the now defunct Brooklyn Prep, where he became a star athlete. He excelled at basketball and quarterbacked the football team to a nearly perfect record during his tenure.
