Brooklyn Judge Nicholas Garaufis has appointed Mark Cohen, a former federal prosecutor as special bias monitor for the FDNY. Cohen comes from the Manhattan firm Cohen & Gresser and will oversee hiring, training, and promotions of minorities in the nation’s largest fire department. As it currently stands, 93 percent of the agency’s 11,000 firefighters are white.

The impetus came about from a 2007 lawsuit filed by the US Justice Department that found the FDNY systematically discriminated against black and Hispanic applicants for decades.
