The Federal Highway Administration has decided to shelve plans to rebuild or replace the Gowanus Expressway with a tunnel. Residents have long complained about the traffic congestion on this artery that runs from the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
The Department of Transportation launched a $680-million “interim” fix of the Gowanus in 2005, but budget constraints have now forced the Federal Highway Administration to swap the long-term solution for short-term fixes including such upgrades as new lighting along parts of the highway and a wider connector ramp.
