On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13, Brooklyn’s Catholics were still processing Monday morning’s surprise announcement of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation. He is the first leader of the Roman Catholic Church to step down in almost 600 years. The last time a Pope left his role while still alive was 1415, with Pope Gregory XII. At St. Boniface Church in downtown Brooklyn, parishioners expressed a mix of surprise and confidence for the future of the Church.
