In a letter to the City Council, New York City’s police commissioner announced a shift of policy at the New York Police Department regarding the investigation of traffic crashes. In the past, the NYPD would conduct robust investigations on crashes only when at least one victim had died. According to the new policy, the NYPD has started extending investigations to crashes that result in critical injuries but not certain or likely death.
The change came as a result of a series of high-profile traffic crashes that attracted media and public attention. The latest was a hit-and-run crash in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which resulted in the death of a pregnant woman, her husband and their prematurely delivered son.
