David Ranta, a man jailed for the killing of a Brooklyn rabbi in 1990, will be released as soon as Thursday when evidence came to light suggesting that detectives improperly handled his case. The murder of Chaskel Werzberger gripped the city, and Ranta, who was a drug addict and unemployed, was convicted for the crime in 1991. However no physical evidence incriminated Ranta, and new evidence shows that detectives involved with the case allowed other inmates to visit prostitues in return for testifying against Ranta. Ranta is currently serving time at a prison near Buffalo.
