The Brooklyn district attorney’s office is investigating the actions of the city and outside agencies following the death of a four-year-old girl who weighed just 18 pounds when she died last month, the New York Times reports.
The DA’s office is investigating the Administration of Children’s Services and outside health and social service agencies following the death of Marchella Pierce, whose bruised and thin body was found in her mother’s Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment on Sept. 2. The girl’s mother, Carlotta Brett-Pierce, is already being charged with assault and reckless endangerment.
The ACS issued a preliminary report Tuesday saying it will rule that the girl’s death was caused by her being abused and neglected. But the report alleged a caseworker and supervisor failed to visit the girl for months, despite signs she was at risk.
