Looking back 158 years, this from the New York Times archive:

FIRE–EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS Loss.-Friday night, about 12 o’clock, a tire broke out in the large brick building in John-street, near Bridge, occupied by Messrs. Weed Howe, coopers, and owned by Mr Tolman, of New-York, by which the building, with its contents, were destroyed. There were in the building at the time about 7,000 kegs and barrels, besides a quantity of stock, and the tools of the workmen.
