NYU has released a new report, asking the age-old question, “Where’s the money?” (in Brooklyn). It’s 20 pages, so you probably shouldn’t take an hour from the work day to read it. Instead, we did it for you.

Here’s what’s been going down (and up) in Brooklyn in the last decade:

Shocking Fact #1: The unemployment rate increased between 2007 and 2008. It went from 6.7 percent to 7.2 percent in one year. But take a deep breath, it’s still well below the 10.7 percent rate in 2000.

Shocking Fact #2: Housing prices declined in 2009. Brooklyn hit its peek in terms of housing values later, but we’re pretty much back down in the doldrums with everyone else by now.

Genuinely appalling fact #1: Serious housing code violations in Brooklyn are up from about 61 per 1,000 units to about 64 per 1,000 units. Brooklyn is also the “winner” for severely overcrowded houses in the city.

Good news fact #1: More Brooklyn residents take public transportation than any other borough. Oh wait, they’re cutting the MTA service to the area. Make that Bad news fact #1

There’s more information. Plus detailed borough-by-borough analysis in the report.
