A blue-ribbon panel lead by a Brooklyn judge and a Manhattan prosecutor, will attempt to fix New York’s sentencing laws, which Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman described as  “a hodgepodge with no rhyme or reason.”  The New York Daily News reports that the Permanent Sentencing Commission for New York State, which Lippman commissioned, will examine laws that were drafted four decades ago and that lead to sentencing confusion, especially in cases involving sex and gun crimes. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., and Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Barry Kamins will head up a team of defense lawyers, Judges and crime victims.
