Cafe Owners Sue The Times

Home Live Wire Cafe Owners Sue The Times

The owners of a Park Slope Cafe are suing the New York Times for defamation, because the paper published information on poor working conditions at their establishment.

Gorilla Coffee owners Carol MacLaughlin and Darleen Schere say the Times subjected them to “shame, emotional, distress, contempt and ridicule” back in April when the newspaper reprinted parts of a letter signed by all of its employees that said Gorilla was a hostile place to work, with a “demeaning work environment” that was “unhealthy” and “unworkable.”

The workers who signed the letter quit en masse a few weeks after the Times article was published.  Gorrilla´s owners have not talked to the media about their recent decision to sue the newspaper, but their lawyer told the Brooklyn Paper that Gorilla´s business was seriously hurt by the article.
