Joel Klein, the longest running New York City school chancellor, stepped down, after eight years.

Klein, joined by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the newly- appointed chancellor, Cathie Black announced at a press conference yesterday that he would become the Executive Vice President at News Corp, reported the New York Daily News.

The job was given to Klein in 2002, when the state turned control of the school system over to City Hall.

Bloomberg praised Klein for turning a school system that was “a case study for dysfunction” into a national model.

Black, former chairman of Hearst Magazines, was called a “great New Yorker” and described as “brilliant, innovative and driven” by the mayor.

“She is a superstar manager who has succeeded in the private sector,” Bloomberg said.
