Why death? It’s not because we’re morbid. We chose this topic because, in a borough of astounding diversity, death is the rare universal experience. We examined how culture, religion and community shape perceptions and practices surrounding the inevitable. We dug up data on mortality, examined Brooklyn’s burial spaces and spoke to the people — from florists to funeral directors — who deal daily with death. Oxymoronic as it may seem, death is an indispensable part of life.
