State Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, a representative of Brooklyn district No. 57 and a Prospect Heights resident, is gearing up to defeat long-term incumbent Rep. Edolphus Towns in next year’s congressional race.

The 41-year-old Jeffries thinks that an “injection of new ideas and energy will be helpful,” according to a story in the New York Times today. Within the next couple of days, his campaign committee plans to disclose that he has so far raised $173,750 in contributions, the Times wrote.

Jeffries is taking on a fellow Democrat who has held office since 1983.

The assemblyman is a lawyer with a wife and two sons. He hopes to bring issues of housing, education and criminal justice to the forefront in Washington, if he wins.
