James Cheeseman, a retired NYPD detective who received an award for catching a fugitive during a Manhattan gun battle, has died. He was 79, the NY Daily News reports.

Cheeseman grew up in Bay Ridge. He served in the Navy and then joined the NYPD in 1956. Only a year into his police career, Cheeseman caught a fugitive, George (the Eel) Larned, while patrolling the Upper West Side. Cheeseman was able to take down the fugitive after an exchange of fire. The NYPD gave him an award for his heroism.

The decorated police officer died on October 10th.
