Brooklyn Sate Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries joined other legislators on Thursday in calling for the creation of an independent commission to investigate what has been described as systemic corruption in the New York Police Department.
From charges of planting drugs to gun running and ticket fixing, the NYPD has dealt in recent weeks with a spate of charges.
Jeffries, a Democrat, said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg “can no longer ignore…a culture of corruption” inside the NYPD that he said is undermining public confidence in law enforcement.
