Growing up in a predominantly white community, Samantha Knowles, now 22, was always asked why she had black dolls by her friends. As a student at Dartmouth College, Knowles decided to honor her inanimate childhood companions in a documentary film which discusses the significance of African American dolls in the black community through interviews with doll makers and historians. ” Why Do You Have Black Dolls,” which has already been picked up by various film festivals, will be screened tonight at at the Ingersoll Community Center in Brooklyn.
