Home Brooklyn Life [VIDEO] Boerum Hill’s Lost Demographic

It used to be a lower middle class neighborhood of mostly Puerto Rican immigrants. In the past decade, most have left. The few that stayed have mixed feelings about what has become of their community.

Boerum Hill’s stock of beautiful well kept brownstones, along with its proximity to six subway lines that go into Manhattan, have caused its housing prices to spike and its demographics to change. Today, it is the most expensive neighborhood in Brooklyn based on median sale prices, according to a recently published market report by real estate website PropertyShark. Much of the Puerto Rican community has dispersed to less expensive locations. Only few have stayed to live in a neighborhood that serves as a model for the changes taking place throughout the borough.
