The city has brokered a deal to bring a ShopRite to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a City-owned 300-acre industrial park surrounded by 12-foot-high brick walls. The area has been deemed a “food desert” by City Councilwoman Leticia James, who represents the area, the Post reported.

The project is expected to break ground by early 2012 and open in 2013. It is  expected to provide 500 permanent jobs and 500 construction jobs. Nine historic, but dilapidated, buildings will be destroyed to make room for the development,  although a former military residence and timber shed at Admirals Row will be restored.
