Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo announced today a settlement that will require ExxonMobil Corporation to pay for the full cleanup of its oil spill and any related environmental contamination in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, according to a statement from the New York Attorney General Press Office.

It is estimated that at least 17 million gallons of oil have leaked from ExxonMobil’s refinery in Greenpoint since the 1970s, according to Cuomo. “For far too long, residents of Greenpoint have been forced to live with an environmental nightmare lurking just beneath their homes, their businesses, and their community,” says Cuomo.

Cuomo made his announcement on Wednesday afternoon at Manhattan Avenue Park in Brooklyn. ExxonMobil will be required to file reports on soil problems, groundwater contamination, and an evaluation of new technology that could speed up the oil cleanup process in the future. ExxonMobil will pay $25 million under the settlement to fund the “Environmental Benefit Projects” in Greenpoint, compensate New York State for past cleanup costs, and cover other penalty costs.
