Goodbye Rentals

Sarah Silver

Sarah Silver is tired of living “hand to mouth.” At age 33, she is stuck in a failing industry.

As an undergraduate, Silver majored in motion picture production. In the digital age, her skill set is quickly becoming obsolete, and her frustration is evident. “Every business that I’ve entered into since my college graduation has been a dying business,” she says. She teaches film editing at three different after-school programs, and manages the indie video rental store Get Reel Video in Park Slope.

Silver is disheartened. “I want a full time job with health insurance,” she says. “I don’t want to keep juggling.” What she wants is a new career, perhaps as a high school teacher.

But her worries about money prevent her from submitting an application to a graduate program in education, “I’m really scared,” she says. “I’ve been procrastinating what I need to do because I’m scared, but I just got to do it.”
