Two Jobs Aint Enough

Eric Reeves depends on his parents for financial security.  That’s his economic indicator.  He is 25 years old and knows he has to make a change—and soon.

Reeves, a recent transplant to Brooklyn, is articulate and friendly.  He has two jobs, one at Almar, Dumbo’s popular Italian eatery, where he works as a waiter, the other, as a jazz musician, where he is new to the scene.   “If I didn’t have my parents there to back me up potentially, I would be living on a knife edge,” he says.

Reeves’ job as a waiter pays for his living expenses.  His job as a musician, paid in tips, adds to his disposable income, but is minimal.  The availability of gigs is also a challenge.  By month’s end, Reeves doesn’t have much saved.

“I’m going to have to buckle down and get serious about something,” he says, folding his hands in his lap.  “Teaching music would probably be my best option for financial security.”  Reeves’ parents, both professional musicians, have teaching jobs as well.  Reeves admits that he will likely follow in their footsteps.
